Woodworking Fuses With Art at EMS
May 30th, 2025
Scott Mulcahey started his career in fine woodworking and shifted his focus several years ago when he joined the maintenance team at Landmark School. Now he's taken on a new role, Elementary•Middle School woodworking teacher.
On the side, Scott has sculpted 200 one-of-a-kind chairs made from wood he's gathered from shipwrecks, old-wood forests, even an old barn on the poet Robert Frost's property that was being dismantled. His approach is to introduce students to woodworking through producing artful, usable pieces. Most recently, a gaggle of high-energy students were putting the finishing touches on their hand-made guitars. Stringing these will be the last step in a multi-step process that has occupied the group for the trimester.
Along the way, students are learning the names of each tool, how to use each one safely, and proper technique. The enthusiasm is palpable and the students and Scott have a comfortable rapor. He's clearly in charge and they respect his knowlege, but the vibe is relaxed, upbeat, productive. As one student shared, "I learned that you can make nearly anything out of wood. I love that!"
