Real-World Learning, One Stitch at a Time
May 20th, 2025
Landmark High School faculty member, Michaela Hillier, is bringing real-world learning to Landmark in her Fashion Design elective. The course has been a popular option for two years and will expand into Fashion Design II as well as Fiber Arts for the 2025-2026 academic year.
This spring, the class wrapped up their year with a fashion show where students presented their designs and handiwork to the community. Students, teachers, and families were excited to see what Landmark's fashion designers had created over the past year.
Fashion Design focuses on core skills of sewing, garment construction, and pattern making, while exploring fashion’s role in culture, identity, and society. As a highlight of the spring trimester, the classes focused on the renowned Met Gala, with this year's theme— Superfine: Tayloring Black Style. Students learned about the history of the African American disaspora and the rise of dandyism in black style and culture as "an assertion of autonomy, beauty, and power in the face of a world that continues to attempt to restrict Black expression.” -Vogue
Hillier's Fashion Design elective emphasizes project-based learning, with students applying math, history, science, and study skills to create original designs. From understanding pattern measurements in multiple systems to researching fashion history and environmental impact, students tackle complex, multi-step projects with creativity and precision.
