Position: Language Arts Department Head - High School
Reports to: Academic Dean
Location: Landmark School – High School Campus

Position Overview
The Language Arts Department Head is responsible for the following skills and tasks, and works in concert with other Department Heads and the Administrative team to meet student needs, effectively train teachers, and develop appropriate courses and curriculum.
Address Student Needs
- Read student files to understand specific individual profiles and student needs
- Lead the LA student scheduling process
- Be available to address student or teacher issues that may arise in any LA class
- Aid faculty in dealing with academic and behavioral issues within their classes in coordination with the Assistant Department Head, Administrators & Advisory Leaders as relevant
Communication
- Establish and maintain communication with Administrators and Advisory Leaders about student progress and any ongoing academic or behavioral issues
- Generate weekly communication on student progress or any concerns
- Be primary communicator for parents in regard to issues within your department such as placement, performance, progress and behavior
- Maintain communication with the Academic Dean’s office as to potential student, faculty, or curriculum issues that may arise
Faculty Supervision
- Collaborate with and train Assistant Department Head or Lead Teacher as needed to best meet needs of faculty and students
- Recruit academic personnel and interview applicants for teaching positions in conjunction with the faculty recruiter
- Perform a specific number of observations of faculty classes and give appropriate feedback aimed at the development of faculty teaching goals
- In coordination with the Portrait of an Educator evaluation process, provide feedback and support goal setting for yearly evaluations
- Work with the Director of Faculty Recruiting & Hiring in supporting and developing first-year faculty training and professional development
- Initiating faculty involvement through meetings and training sessions
- In coordination with the Department of Student Progress and Performance, support and instruct faculty with their involvement in the IEP process and writing Trimester reports
Student Life Coverage & Teaching
- Dormitory coverage commensurate with Department Head position and years of service.
- Milkbreak and lunch coverage as assigned.
- Teach 2 periods.
Materials and Building Management
- Monitor and maintain appropriate workspace and classroom supplies
- Work with the Administrative team and the facilities supervisor to maintain Alexander Building classrooms and workspaces
Requirements
Candidates must have, or be working towards, their Master’s Degree and an active Massachusetts state teacher licensure.
