From Manchester to Japan, Pen Pals

November 15th, 2023

For four years, Elementary•Middle School (EMS) students, through faculty member Freddi Triback and her Kids Around the Globe elective, Social Studies classes, and even in tutorials, have been corresponding by letter with students in Japan. The relationship was founded by way of former head of EMS, Rob Kahn, over 10 years ago. Mr. Kahn forged a relationship with educators in Japan who have been visiting Landmark regularly to collaborate and learn about our approach and method.

Pen Pal fever is catching on at our partner school in Japan. This year, two more teachers wanted their classes to participate which meant finding Landmark School pen pals for nearly 200 more students. Ms. Triback enlisted the support of her colleagues on both campuses and more students are participating than ever before.

Students exchange notes about likes and dislikes, personal interests, birthdays, and other special occasions. Many share their thoughts and feelings in pictures. Take a look at a small sampling of notes that our students have received from their pen pals in Japan.

One of the children in Japan shared their feelings about having an American pen pal. "These letters are treasures! I hope that this correspondence will lead me to become even more interested in English and to enjoy interacting with people from other countries."
