Suitcases Packed and Ready

February 10th, 2023

Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Stark's elementary classes recently completed a long-term project related to a book that they are reading in their classes called Some Places More Than Others, by award winning author, Renee Watson. The story follows the main character, Amara, as she explores her family's history and heritage. Inspired by the plot of the novel, students constructed their own booklet/suitcase that featured a variety of aspects of their ancestry, personal characteristics, and interests.

The culmination of the project was a presentation that the two classes offered where faculty and staff, as well as some EMS students, were invited to walk around the Hagale Community Room to learn what the students included in their suitcases. Participating students did an exceptional job of answering a series of questions from visitors that included everything from providing a summary of an interview with a family member and answering questions about suitcase contents like favorite quotes, what item best represents your ancestors, and more.

Kudos to Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Stark, and their talented students for sharing their reflections and for packing their suitcases with a load of interesting information.
