My Story: An excercise in self discovery
June 7th, 2023
One of the most significant ways that Landmark School differs from many other academic settings is that it makes a concerted effort to partner with students to help them better understand themselves as people—and as learners.
Under the supervision of Elementary•Middle School (EMS) faculty member, Ann Andrew, three Landmark students shared their My Story presentations with all EMS faculty and staff at a recent Milkbreak meeting.
"The goal of the project was to help our students better understand themselves so that they can effectively advocate for their needs in the future," said Andrew.
Gemma S., Lola R., and River G. shared the results of many weeks of research and rehearsals to reveal a range of important self discoveries including their strengths, challenges, goals, and dreams. They outlined what they need as learners which included: more time, graphic organizers, being involved in their learning, hands-on activities, and to be challenged. They also shared their promise as learners including: working hard, accepting feedback, participating in class, asking for clarification, and reaching out when they need help. Students also shared myths and facts about having dyslexia as well as a quote that they selected for inspiration.
The students shared artwork with phrases that helped to illustrate their likes and dislikes, interests, and hobbies. See below.
