| SUMMER
BOARDING AT LANDMARK
Landmark's
Summer Boarding Program offers an exciting choice of educational,
cultural, and recreational experiences. Living in a Landmark
dorm encourages individual responsibility, achievement, and
independence. A full schedule of supervised, after-school
activities includes visits to local beaches, state parks,
museums, seaports, cities, and overnight camping trips.
FULL-DAY
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
Boarding and day
students can choose our Full-Day Academic Program, which offers
a comprehensive schedule of academic classes and two daily
one-to-one Language Arts tutorials. Reading, writing,
spelling and composition, as well as math, study skills, and
electives are offered.
HALF-DAY
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
Day students may choose
our Half-Day Program of academics in the morning. This option
works to build language arts skills through small classes
and a daily one-to-one Language Arts tutorial.
ACADEMIC CLASS
DESCRIPTIONS
Language
Arts Tutorial
A daily one-to-one tutorial
is tailored to each student. The curriculum is developed
by an academic case manager working in conjunction with a
tutor. Together they build a diagnostic program based
on formal and informal assessments. The one-to-one tutorial
may address the following areas of instruction:
- Oral reading
- Spelling
- Reading comprehension
- Composition
- Study Skills
- Handwriting
Language
Arts
The Language Arts classes focus on written
expression using a five-step model which includes:
brainstorming, organizing ideas, rough drafting, proofreading
and editing, and final drafting.
Landmark High School focuses on expository writing for academics
and everyday life. Specific skill work, such as sentence
structures, punctuation and descriptive language, are taught
in isolation and then applied to students’ writing.
Paragraph framing techniques, including templates, are utilized
as needed, at all levels of the writing hierarchy. Classes
are conducted within the context of thematic units, and offer
three basic levels of instruction:
- Single paragraph writing
- Multi-paragraph writing
- Essay writing
Mathematics
Landmark combines individualized and
systematic approaches to Mathematics. New material is
presented in small segments or micro-units. Overall
goals for each class include:
- Developing confidence by providing an experience of success
doing math
- Improving areas of weakness and filling in gaps in the
student’s math experience
- Working towards becoming a better problem solver
- Introducing and developing math study skills
Students
are placed in classes to review the course
they had during the previous school year, or preview
their expected coursework for the upcoming school year.
In most summers, the following mathematics courses
are offered: Foundations of High School Math, Algebra
I, Geometry, Algebra II, Advanced Algebra, and Pre-Calculus.
(For detailed course descriptions
please reference the high school Curriculum Guide.
)
Study Skills
This course targets three primary
areas of organization: time, materials, and information.
Study Skills classes are designed to help students develop
a more organized and independent approach to learning.
Organizational skills are first taught in isolation.
Students are then asked to practice strategies. They
are taught how to:
- Recognize and formulate main ideas
- Take notes
- Paraphrase and summarize information
Students are encouraged to explore
and understand their unique learning styles. Depending
on their knowledge and ability with the initial skills that
are introduced, a
student may be asked to
apply these skills to more challenging tasks such as reading
textbooks, test-taking techniques, and lecture note-taking.
FULL-DAY
COMBINATION PROGRAM
Combine
a morning of academics, including a daily one-to-one tutorial,
with one of the following afternoon activities:
Marine Science
Exploring the North Shore's coastal and ocean ecosystems,
working on research
teams, collecting data, and applying basic interdisciplinary
academic skills are all part
of Marine Science. The program provides hands-on learning
and experiences of
discovery through field, laboratory, and classroom studies.
(To become actively involved
in the spirit of Marine Science studies, students should feel
comfortable in and around
water).
Adventure Ropes • Sea Kayaking
In Adventure Ropes students are challenged to develop
leadership, problem-
solving skills, and perseverance through high ropes elements.
By the end of stage
one, students learn to climb 60 feet into the trees.
Sea Kayaking teaches students to
enjoy the water while learning paddling and safety techniques,
seamanship, navigation
and wet exits. The group explores coastal environments
and group dynamics
with a "Shipwreck Drill." As a final challenge,
students perform an independent solo
experience and return home with new perspectives.
Musical Theater
Students learn how to stage a full-scale theatrical production
in just six weeks. Each
member of the cast and crew has the opportunity to perform
on stage or develop
technical theater skills behind-the-scenes. On-stage
performers learn to act, dance,
and sing as part of a musical company. Technical theater
students try their hand at set
building and design, sound and lighting, and produce the summer
production.
The Performing Arts comes alive at Landmark.
