Research Alert from Landmark
Collaborating with Landmark School, Dr. Nadine Gaab of Children’s Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School, and the Graduate School of Education at Harvard is conducting research focused on the early detection of reading difficulties in young children.  The study is seeking young children (age 4 - 6) in the pre-reading stage, with at least one family member diagnosed with dyslexia (either one sibling or one parent). Community Action Team Update
The Landmark Community Action Team offers periodic community service activities for elementary and middle school students both after school and during milkbreak.

The Community Action Team recently completed a project of making recycled paper note pad.  The pads were sold and all proceeds were donated to Kestrel, a group which provides environmental education programs to schools.

Please look out for notices regarding upcoming projects.  If you have any questions regarding this group or would like to help organize a service project, please email Meredith Katter (mkatter@landmarkschool.org) or Anna DiPerna (adiperna@landmarkschool.org).

Dress Code
The Student Handbook includes a Dress Code for both elementary and middle school students. Please read it carefully, and plan fall wardrobes with the details in mind. The highlights are summarized below to assist with planning and shopping.

BOYS

  • Pants must be solid color; shorts are acceptable in warm weather, though must follow the same style guidelines as long pants (e.g., no beach shorts, no athletic shorts).
  • Collared shirts are required; acceptable shirts include both “polo” style and button-up shirts with collars.
  • Sweaters or sweatshirts without hoods may be worn only over a collared shirt or turtleneck; no hooded pullover or zip-up sweatshirts are allowed.
  • No denim of any kind.
  • Sneakers, shoes, or sandals are acceptable; no beach-style flip-flops.

GIRLS

  • Skirts must be knee length
  • Long pants, capri pants, skorts, and shorts (in warm weather) are acceptable.
  • Collared shirts / blouses required
(Note: Girls cannot wear a tank top with an unbuttoned blouse as an “overblouse.” The primary shirt is intended to have a collar; therefore, the collared shirt must be buttoned and tucked in.)
  • Sweaters or sweatshirts without hoods may be worn only over a collared shirt or turtleneck; no hooded pullover or zip-up sweatshirts or sweaters are allowed.
  • No denim of any kind.
  • Clothing must cover midriffs; skirts must be knee length; “short shorts” are not allowed. Shorts must be “walking length” or “Bermuda” length (at the discretion of Academic Dean).  Necklines must be modest; "deep v-neck" shirts are not allowed (discretion of Academic Dean or other faculty).

Drop-Off and Dismissal Procedures
Your assistance is needed to keep the drop-off and dismissal procedures working smoothly. Students should be dropped off between 7:15 and 7:45 AM. We request your cooperation in observing these times. During dismissal, students will be dismissed through one of two supervised points: the front door archway and the back archway. For safety reasons, please do not pick up your child at any other places on campus. Dashboard display signs will be handed out in the first weeks of school; please use these consistently. Call the school in
advance (978-236-3102) to notify us of changes in transportation (e.g., different driver, home with another student).

Homework Policy for Illness
The following information should clarify our policy about sending work home for students when they are absent:

In many cases, our homework assumes that the students were in class that day and would not be appropriate to send to those who missed the lesson.

Teachers may simply not have time to prepare alternative work packets for students who are absent or who are leaving unexpectedly on short notice.Faculty have full teaching loads and cannot always prepare packets for specified delivery times. As a result, please be aware that it is often neither possible nor necessary to send homework to students for brief absences (12 days). If homework assignments are readily available and appropriate, teachers may be able to send certain assignments home. With the individualized classes at Landmark, be assured that students will be able to make up any work missed after they return.

For extended absences, please contact the case manager to arrange for work
packets to be sent home.

School Supplies
Parents often ask about Landmark’s recommendation for purchasing school supplies. Requirements are simple. Students in both the elementary and middle school programs should come to school with the following materials:

  • one 3-ring binder and lined loose-leaf filler paper
  • Pocket portfolio or folder to hold homework papers
  • Pencils (not mechanical)
  • Landmark Assignment Notebook (will be given to students on first day of class)
The assignment notebook is provided by Landmark; use of this assigment book is required because it ensures consistency among students. There is no need to purchase alternate assignment notebooks or planners. Please note that pens will not be used in classes, so there is no need for students to purchase pens.
