Kevin Roberts completes the Boston Marathon with a personal best!

Months of training and fundraising have paid off for Kevin Roberts and Landmark School. By the end of the race, Kevin boasted of a personal best marathon time and beamed knowing that he had run a much more challenging course than ever before. The prospect of a new athletic field was given a great boost by the Kevin's Run fundraiser. We're $21,500 closer to our goal through the generous donations of Landmark supporters and Kevin's loyal fans! Thank you all for your support, and thank you Kevin for your determination, perseverance, and the pride you have brought to Landmark.

The course, as always, went from Hopkinton to Boston. With over 25,000 participants, watching the race gave a dizzying effect. Wave after wave they came, and text messages kept Kevin's loyal fans up-to-date on his progress. A bottleneck occurred right from the start as the crowded wave of runners made Kevin's first split look much slower than his true pace. By the 7-mile update, Kevin had dropped his time down to a healthy average of 8 minutes per mile. He kept it there for most of the race, passing the half-marathon mark with only a slight dip in his average pace.

At mile 17, Kevin was spotted by a few Landmark faculty. Reports went out that Kevin was “going strong and looking great!” Amid a sea of pained faces, Kevin's “LMK” emblazoned shirt and healthy grin came into view at mile 21 in Newton. Kevin gave this brief report to a fellow Landmark teacher who jumped in for a few paces, “My legs are burning. I am cramping up.” But a cry from the crowd, “Yeah, Landmark School!” gave Kevin the burst he needed to tackle Heartbreak Hill with his ego in tact.

Within miles of the finish, Kevin was joined by a fellow cross country coach who darted in from the lines of spectators, “You look great! You are almost there! Nothing can stop you now!” That encouragement carried Kevin through the finish line, where his wife Cath and four-year old son Wes sent up a final “Go, Kevin...GO!” Kevin had finished the Boston Marathon! Moments later, a cheer went up from all those following Kevin via the text message updates: “He finished with a personal best! Way to go, Kev!”

Yesterday, Kevin began training for another marathon which he will run in just over a week! Forget Ironman, we're cheering for a true Landmark hero... “GO, KEVLAR!”
