Landmark recognizes the aerobic, cardiovascular, emotional,
and social benefits that athletics offers students. We adhere
to the principles of sportsmanship, character development,
hard work, commitment, and dedication, as the core components
to our athletic program and view participation in athletics
as an opportunity for our students to build and enhance their
self-esteem. Although Landmark recognizes the importance of
athletics, academic expectations must be met in order to maintain
athletic eligibility.
Landmark participates in the Eastern Independent League (male)
which is a member of The New England Preparatory School Athletic
Council (NEPSAC). Landmark has been affiliated with the E.I.L.
for the past fifteen years. Since joining the E.I.L., the
integrity and growth of the athletic program has been monumental
and the opportunities for our student athletes has been modified
to meet our students’ athletic needs, as well as league
requirements. Landmark is also a member of the Independent
Girls Conference. This conference also values the principles
of sportsmanship and adheres to a similar mission statement
as Landmark. Giving students the opportunity to compete in
two leagues which recognizes sportsmanship, fair play, and
healthy competition only bolsters their self-image and enhances
their growth.

of genres, including folk songs, a cappella, Broadway Standards,
and major works such as the Mozart Requiem. It tours annually
to places such as New York, New Jersey, Boston, Rhode Island,
New Mexico, and Washington, D.C. Additionally, it has released
four professionally-produced CDs, which can be purchased by
clicking here.
The Landmark Chamber Choir is a smaller, auditioned choir comprised of members of The Landmark Chorus. This ensemble strives to develop the vocal talent of our students more rigorously by featuring music appropriate for a smaller vocal ensemble, such as madrigals and vocal jazz.
Landmark Dance incorporates tap, jazz, and
ballet in several performances over the year. It has recently
joined the Landmark Chorus on its annual tour.
The Landmark Stage Company produces three
shows per year, including a main stage musical. Emphasis is
placed on exposing students to the classics of Western Theater.
This exposure includes all theatrical elements: acting, stage
direction, technical support, costuming, music, house management, and
audio production. DVD copies of our two most recent musicals can be purchased by clicking here.
Drum and Percussion Class is offered to
students of all ability levels during the academic day, as
a class that meets every day.
Individual lessons are offered in voice,
piano, and guitar as an after school activity.

POLARIS
Our mission is “To help students discover and build
a foundation of virtues that will empower them to deal effectively
with adolescent issues and guide them in future decisions.”
The Polaris Project conveys the idea of Polaris, the North
Star, as the guiding star. We want to help students establish
an inner compass that will provide direction and guide them
through their adult lives.
Several small groups of six to eight students and two faculty
advisors establish the group dynamic. Each group meets once
a week in an informal, interactive setting that emphasizes
character development, and accountability. Project curriculum
is experience-based, and includes activities such as games,
field trips, meals and community service. By participating
in the Polaris Project, Landmark students become involved
in a program that provides positive experiences, fosters greater
self-knowledge and belonging to their community, and encourages
personal growth and connection within a supportive group dynamic.

INTERDISCIPLINARY
EXPERIENCE (IDE)
Each year, Landmark staff and students work on an interdisciplinary
project that broadens their experience more than what they
encounter in the classroom. All the departments collaborate
on activities and experiences that will enhance learning and
capture the interest and imagination of the students.
This year's topic is Music and Sound. Students will be exploring
broad questions such as, What is music and how is it used?
When does sound become music? How is any culture influenced
by music? and more.
Students will "travel" to different areas of the
world and experience culturally diverse forms of music. They
will create percussion instruments from found material and
form a percussion "band". They will examine the
materials of music through history which will provide insight
into music's changes.
The IDE will culminate with concerts booked through The Young
Audiences of America.

STUDENT
LIFE
Landmark's residential mission is to support students as they
grow to understand and accept their language-based learning
disabilities. The residential staff works in conjunction with
the academic program to create a consistent program of study.
The focus of the residential program is to promote positive
self advocacy skills, develop organizational skills, and increase
an awareness of the complexity of the social environment.
Landmark students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular
activities based on their interests. Opportunities are available
in athletics, community service, performing arts and various
clubs and activities. Resident students are required to participate
in at least one season of structured sport or team oriented
activity.

COMMUNITY
SERVICE The Community Service program is an opportunity for students to become a vital part of the greater community. They are encouraged to give of their time to those less fortunate or in need which in turn provides students with experiences that enhance their sense of self and their sense of connectedness to those around them. Some of the on-going community service projects include: Habitat for Humanity, Salem Mission Shelter for the Homeless, Beverly Hospital and Special Olympics. There are opportunities for students to volunteer throughout the year.
