Landmark's girl's varsity tennis team played aggressively and showcased their skills by winning all of their matches against the Newman School of Boston today, April 10th.  First doubles, Caroline C. and Brittany D.-S., pulled away from their opponents for an 8-3 victory; their teammates, second doubles Christina N. and Alina D. also recovered quickly from a faulty start to win their match 8-1.  Third doubles, Hana P. and Lena G. dominated the court in an 8-0 success.  The girls take on Pingree School on Monday April 14th.

The Landmark girl’s varsity tennis team began the season yesterday (April 8th) playing Gann Academy.  Landmark’s first singles, Brittany D.-S., was fast on her feet and serving strong, but lost her match to Lauren G. in the second set. (1-6, 2-6)  Second singles, Alina D., exhibited her persistence over the course of her 1 hour and 20 minute match against Margeaux P.l with set scores 4-6 and 5-7.  Christina N., Landmark’s number three singles, made technical improvements on her returns throughout the match, but was defeated by Gann’s Ali P. 1-6, 2-6.  Landmark’s first doubles, Lena G. and Julia C. were swept by Ariela and Ali (0-6, 0-6), and second doubles Hana P. and Sarah C. put up a fierce fight to Calia and Hannah, but lost the tie breaker after the second set (2-6, 7-5, 0-5).  The team is looking forward to playing the Newman School April 10th.

The Landmark Boys Tennis team opened its season yesterday in an away match against the Beaver Country Day School, the reigning league champion.  In spite of limited practice time to get ready for the match, Landmark played exceptionally well and nearly came away with upset victory.

At first doubles, Tim K. & Jake J. played an extremely close match before losing in a super tie breaker by two points.  Tim was all over the court hitting a combination of volleys at the net and hard winners down the middle between his opponents.  Jake also played excellent tennis and delivered some excellent drop shots while also setting up deep return volleys.  At second doubles, Luke M. and JR H. combined for their first match together and came away victorious in yet another super tie breaker.  Luke played steady tennis with excellent shot placement and selection while JR was a force at the net when delivering winners at varying angles.

At first singles, Bobby B. lost the first set but then came back strong in the second set only to lose it at 6-4.  As Bobby played, he got stronger forehand shots and his serve began to land more consistently.  At second singles, senior Jeremiah R. stepped up and played at the second singles slot for the first time in his career at Landmark.  Facing an equivalent number one singles player, Jeremiah played tough and improved consistently as the match unfolded.  Finally, at third singles, freshman Christian D. played exceptional tennis mixing strong ground strokes with a consistent first serve.  Though losing his match, Christian showed excellent potential once the team can start practicing more consistently.

At exhibition doubles, Matt T & Even F stepped in and played competitive tennis.  The teams matched up evenly with the overall match ending in a split of sets.  Matt used his height and power to win points, while Evan complemented Matt’s game with strong serving and volleys to win points.

Gann:  0

The varsity baseball team won its third straight game beating Gann Academy 9-0 to bring our record to 4 -3. Pitcher Andrew Dwinell got his third win of the season in what was by far his best outing of the year. He took a no hitter into the 6th inning, and pitched the complete game, allowing 3 hits while striking out 7.  Jordan Yorks led the offense going 2 for 2 with 2 walks, 3 runs, and 4 stolen bases.  Over the last three games, Landmark has out scored its opponents 35 to 5.

Jake P. pitched five no innings to complete the mercy rule victory over BCD. The only batter he allowed to reach on base reached on a walk in the 3rd inning.  The Landmark defense was spectacular, and the offensive was even better. Everyone contributed to the hitting, and the team played well in all aspects of the game

Bancroft:  5

The Varsity Baseball team went to Bancroft yesterday and won 11-5 bringing our record to 2 and 3. The hitting started early as we put a 4 spot on the board in the first inning. The offensive charge was led by Nick F. who went 4 for 4 with a walk, two RBIs, and 3 runs scored. Sam B. went 2 for 2 with two walks and was hit by a pitch, scoring twice. Anton F. went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. The bats backed another strong outing for sophomore  Andrew D., who picked up his second varsity win.

LCA:  1

Lost a tough one to LCA 1-0. What the bats lacked, the defense made up for. Defensive highlight of the game was a 6th inning bases loaded triple play to end a potential big inning for LCA. Nick F. Pitched 5 strong innings and Jordan Y.  pitched 2 shutout innings to keep us within striking distance

Dexter-Southfied:  8

LMK: 5

The JV Vikings first game of the season got off to a rocky start.  After a quick 3 up and 3 down for the Landmark hitters, the Dexter Southfield offense exploded in the bottom half of the frame, scoring 5 runs while being aided by several Landmark fielding errors.  Landmark settled down nicely after that though, and over the next few innings managed to cut the deficit to 6-5.  Unfortunately, the bats were quiet after that, and Dexter dealt Landmark their first loss of the season by adding a couple more insurance runs to win the contest 8-5.  Thoia K. pitched the complete game loss for the Vikings, while recording an impressive 9 strikeouts, and although he let up 8 total runs, only 3 of those runs were earned.  The offensive effort was evenly spread out across the team, with all 7 hits coming from different contributors.  Mike M., Mike B., and Stephen S. all recorded RBI singles in the 4 run fourth inning. Landmark’s record is 0-1.
