Boys Varsity Basketball

12/15/06

The Landmark Boys Varsity Team shot out the gate with a 52-47 victory over Waring. It was a well balanced performance and team effort. Against Gann, the Vikings fought to overcome being shorthanded by two key players but fell short 42-47 to the host. Christian M. had a monster game with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Brett P. paced with 13 points and key ball handling. Against powerful Concord, Brett P. led an uphill climb against the visitors with 17 points. The ball just wouldn't bounce the Viking's way. Against Pingree, the young men gave their best effort against the rival Pingree School. Landmark was down 4 with six and a half minutes left but had some misfortune down the stretch. Regardless, it was the finest outing of the season. Christian M. led the way again with 16 points and 13 rebounds while new starter Chris S. chipped in with 12points. Against Cambridge School of Weston the Vikes got the Monday blues against a tough and heady opponent. Despite the early setbacks, the Vikings look forward to the second part of the year where they will continue to give their all to best represent the blue and gold.

1/19/07

The boys varsity basketball team practiced hard all week leading up to their Friday matchup against the top team in the league, Beaver Country Day School.  Although they battled for the entire game, Landmark fell by the score of 69-50.  Led by sophomore Jordan Y., the Vikings scratched their way to a 31-31 tie at half time.  Jordan finished the game with a team-high 18 points (four three pointers).  Beaver used their talent and depth to pull away from Landmark in the second half, but Landmark worked extremely hard for the entire game.  Brett P. continued his solid play with 11 points.

1/25/07

Sophomores Ryan S. and Jordan Y. led Landmark to a thrilling comeback overtime victory at Berwick Academy tonight.  Ryan buried five three pointers in the second hand to help Landmark overcome a slow first half.  Down ten points at halftime, the team came out of the locker room on fire for the second half.  Ryan and Jordan seemingly hit three pointers every time down the floor while the defense, led by Brett P. and Anton F., stifled the Berwick offense.  The second half ended in a 49-49 tie.  In overtime, the Vikings continued their surge, scoring the first six points of the extra frame while holding Berwick to 4 points in the final 4 minutes.

1/29/07 Boys JV on a Roll!!

The boys JV basketball team beat Pingree 35-32 on Monday night.  When we started the season 0-6, it seemed like we found ways to lose in a variety of different situations.  Every game was close and every game we ended up losing.  We gave up a lead in the second half in every game... except in our loss to Pingree, who beat us by 12 back on December the 8th.  The win tonight was not a total surprise - we finished a very strong game against a talented Beaver Country Day team for a win  2 weeks ago.  We also had overcome a very physical Berwick team on their floor and won decisively.  But down by 5 with a minute to go against Pingree, things looked more dire.  But not a single player on our team gave up.  We found a way to win.  Led by Andrew R., we applied full court pressure and forced turnover after turnover.  Even after missing a couple of shots, we kept stealing the ball.  Andrew scored our team's final 6 points with cuts and drives to the basket, and drove the nail home with 2 free throws. This is our fifth straight win, and like the others it was a team effort.  Each player contributed crucial minutes to the game and played with great intensity.  Ryder R. and Kevin B. came up huge in rebounding during the final stretch, as did Ian G. who added 9 point to the effort.  Jake P. hit a clutch three off of an out of bounds play and scored several other key baskets in the second half.  Unfortunately, I don't have time here to mention each player's efforts, but they all deserve mention.  During the final stretch, Landmark had only one turnover while forcing many.  Despite being in foul trouble and having calls go the other way, Landmark committed very few fouls down the stretch.  While showing improvement in every aspect of the game, our team has particularly improved at defense and rebounding.  Our ability to rotate and close out shots in our 2-3 zone has started to really slow teams down.  Lastly, I can't say enough about our ability to apply full court pressure when it counted during the final minute and a half.  It was an exciting finish tonight, and I look forward to more of them.

1/23/07 - The JV-2 boys fell to Fessenden in a close battle that resulted in 32-24loss.Fessenden seemingly made every ridiculous shot they took, while the Landmark boys fought hard to keep the deficit narrow.   The game ultimately fell out of reach within the last minute, despite many strong individual performances.   The player of the game was Matthew W., who scored the the teams first double-double by contributing 10 points and 10 rebounds.  C-Captains Tim K. and Kevin C. combined for an additional 12 points.  The loss extends the boys losing streak to 4, and brings their overall record to 2-6.

1/25/07

The JV-2 boys suffered a loss against Dexter Southfield: 47-31
Despite trailing 31 to 11 at the half, the boys played hard the second half and showed the eager fans the type of play they are capable of, outscoring Dexter 20-16 in the second half.  Kevin C. and Tim K. put up respectable numbers with 14 and 8 points respectively, and Matt W. fought hard for his second 10+ rebound game in a row.
With the loss, the boys record falls to 2-7.

2/5/07

The JV2 boys fell to Brookwood in a 32-42 loss.

A very scrappy Brookwood team kept the pressure on for the whole game, but the Landmark boys stayed with them for most of the game, thanks to exceptional teamwork. Eight out of the nine players in the lineup contributed at least 2 points. Kevin C. led the team with 7 points, while Perry D. and Max C. added personal bests of 6 and 5 points respectively.

Coed Swim Team

12/8/06

After three weeks in the pool, Landmark swimming had a very successful meet thisSaturday at Worcester Academy.  The boys team excercised its depth by defeating Worcester JV soundly despite having a few absences.  Captains Jake S. and Patrick S. were great motivators and really helped the inexperienced swimmers keep their wits about them in the hectic meet setting.  The girls team swam incredibly well, and it was great to see all of the new members of the team settling into places on relays and finding strength in individual events.  Captain Gabby P. and sophmore Kristin W. helped the girls thrive in the meet setting.  The girls had two tight meets against Worcester and Pingree, losing by under ten points in both!  We are looking forward to a strong season for both teams as we move past learning the strokes and into endurance training for the remainder of the winter season.

1/8/07

The members of the swim team did a good job keeping themselves in shape over winter break and are getting ready for racing season.  We will have one meet per week, every Wednesday until early March excepting only February 14th.  No meets are close to our campus, but check our schedule to see if we have a meet in your area.

1/10/07

Landmark Varsity Swim Team had their second meet on January 10th.  The girls team put up a good fight against the Dana Hall team.  Dana Hall has twice as many swimmers asour Landmark team and bested our girls due to their depth.  We had three personal bests, and this right after a two-week break for the winter holidays!  The boys team won their second meet of the season, this time besting St. Sebastian's by 14 points in a well contested meet.  The boys had a few best times and a lot of new events.  Coach Macaulay and Coach Hildebrandt are excited to see how this season progresses as the boys' and girls' teams find the best event combinations.  We will have a rematch of this meet on January 24th, so stay tuned!

1/19/07

This week the Landmark Varsity Swim Team was able to compete as a co-ed squad. Although the team trains together, we usually compete separately as a boys team and a girls team.  The meet this past Wednesday was against Thayer Academy and Pingree, both schools with strong swimming and diving programs.  The meet was well contested, and the mixed events made for some fast relays!  Senior Benjamin G. was a fantastic team player, stepping up to compete in more events when his captain, Jake S. injured his shoulder during warm-ups.  Ben and many others proved that our increased training time is paying off by having faster times than last week's meet.  The team travels back to Dana Hall this week for a rematch from our January 10th meet.  Hope we can fill the stands! Check back soon for pictures.

2/2/07

This week the Landmark boys and girls swim team traveled to Philips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.  Philips Academy proved that years of experience and a pool on site make for a strong team.  The Landmark boys and girls swam separately against the Philips Junior Varsity and both were bested by notable margins.  This might have proved discouraging for our swimmers had they not done such a fantastic job against the tough competition.  Personal bests were seen by more than five members of both teams!  The most best take-home from the meet was a comment from an Andover parent who congratulated the swimmers on the exemplary sportsmanship displayed by the Landmark team.  The points may have said we lost, but somehow it still felt like a win!
