SUMMER PROGRAMS

Landmark’s innovative summer program is ideal for students in grades 1-12 who may need additional skills training. Our five-week program offers individualized programs that include a full day academic program as well as exciting combination programs featuring Seamanship, Marine Science, Exploration and Recreation options. The program applies all of the Landmark techniques in the academic experience with students taking a one-to-one tutorial focusing on reading development, and small group classes to develop skills in writing and math.  Objectives are customized for each student who is placed in small group instructional classes according to skills and needs.

Outside the classroom, students enjoy many team-building activities, such as swimming, sailing, adventure ropes and much more - all as integral parts of the program.

NEW SUMMER OFFERING!
Half Day Program
Day students may choose a half-day academic program. The half-day option concentrates on remediation and mastery of reading, writing and spelling skills. Grades 1-6 attend classes in the morning, while grades 7-12 can choose a morning or afternoon session. All students receive a daily, one-to one tutorial.

Full Day Academic Program for High School Students

This program, for students entering grades 7-12, concentrates on mastering the skills of reading, writing, spelling and composition by providing two daily periods of one-to-one tutorial instruction. These fundamental skills are further reinforced and developed in the small language arts classes of four to eight students. Small classes are also offered in mathematics, study skills, and a variety of electives. Students have three classes in the morning and three in the afternoon.

Full Day Combination Programs
Landmark offers students the opportunity to combine academic skill development with one of four programs: Seamanship, Marine Science, Exploration or Recreation. Students enrolled in one of these programs attend a half day of academic classes concentrating on the mastery of reading, writing and spelling skills. Class size ranges from four to eight students of similar age and achievement levels.

  • Seamanship Program - Grades 7-12
The Seamanship program offers students the opportunity to spend part of their day on the water. Seamanship students receive classroom and practical instruction in handling smaller sailing and rowing boats. Other areas of study include coastal navigation, marine science, coastal ecology, New England maritime history, local fishing methods, and boat maintenance. Trips are arranged to local points of interest. Swimming, exploring tidal pools, and fishing activities complete the program. Landmark seamanship training is designed primarily to build self confidence and enhance self esteem. The sense of community, the necessity for discipline, the spirit of cooperation, and the demands for independent action inherent in sailing give the students a new sense of personal worth.

  • Marine Science Program - Grades 7-12
Marine Science education is offered to students who are curious about and interested in the natural world. Students explore local coastal and ocean ecosystems, work on research teams, collect data and learn basic interdisciplinary academic skills by applying these skills to marine studies. Students develop basic snorkeling techniques and conduct research projects using a broad array of marine research equipment. To become actively involved in the spirit of marine studies, student should feel comfortable in and around water.

  • Exploration - Grades 3 - 6
The Exploration program provides students the opportunity to combine a half-day of academic classes with a half-day Marine Science/ Adventure Ropes experience. Students will receive a daily one-to-one tutorial in reading and literacy skills, a Written Expression class, and a Language Structure/ Literature class. The second part of each day will consist of small group Marine Science and Adventure Ropes activities offered in consecutive 13 day segments. Students will have the chance to experience both programs. Marine Science exploration will involve field trips, lab activities, kayaking and an introduction to snorkeling. The Adventure Ropes session will use Landmark's outdoor challenge course. Students will engage in problem-solving group activities and work cooperatively using an array of initiatives, games, low-ropes and high-ropes programming.

  • Recreation - Grades 1 - 5
Students may combine a half-day Standard Academic Program with an afternoon of recreational activities featuring games, sports, beach trips and field trips to nearby locations of interest. Students will receive a daily one-to-one reading and literacy skills tutorial, a Written Expression class and a Language Structure/ Literature class followed by various recreational activities.
